Office politics
I had my first taste of office politics today.It first came after lunch. Officially, our lunch time was 1pm while it was 12pm for those outside, but we usually pick any 1h period between 12-2pm to lunch because we would be starving by 12pm. Today, we went off for lunch at 12pm as usual. When we came back, K was there waiting for us. She raised her voice at LH and told her that we cannot just run off like that and that we should at least inform F that we were off to lunch. Then she suddenly turned and scolded me too. I was shocked; i call no shots and decide nothing. Once out of earshot, i asked LH about it because i never knew we had to report our absence to lunch. She was clearly pissed off and told me not to care; K also lunches whenever she's hungry. Besides, who was F that we had to report to her. When we went back to our room, i hastened to my little room and quietly began working, clearly still shaken. LH on the other hand, went to talk to K, all the while with that nice, sweet voice. I was like 0.o
The next one was in the evening just before we knocked off. DN came over to ask if i would be free to help out on their side tomorrow since 2 people will be on leave and they will be short of hands. Naturally, i agreed to help out. When K and LH heard about it, they were annoyed and told me that i shouldn't have agreed. I am an employee of CAAS, paid by CAAS, so there's no reason i should provide free services to the other side. So i explained that he had asked if i could help. Being a student and regular volunteer, it's a natural response to say yes; i couldn't very well say no. Then, i was taught the rule to remember: if anything like that happens, just say "I'll ask K" and she'll handle it for me. Also, i should abandon the mindset that i'm a kid whose labour can be exploited; i am now an employed worker.
This'll take me some getting use to.
