Baby Blues
For this lastest clinical session, my tutor/doctor brought us to look at her patients, who are NEONATES(newborns)! They looked so tiny and fragile, their skin a translucent, paper-like quality, their teensy little limbs and mouths and noses and eyes sooo cute!! Unfortunately, those we saw were in the ICU, which means that they were suffering from some congenital diseases :/So we reviewed each case, did visual examinations, discussed the pathophysiology etc. The thing that struck me was our responses in a situation like this. As we learnt about the different defects, some worse than the others, it seemed that while we got very interested in discussing these 'case studies', we might forget that these babies are 'real' people, who are battling with life as we speak, who will have to lead a compromised lifestyle, who have parents who are grieving passionately for their baby..
Idk..somehow it just didn't feel very right. We are constantly being cautioned about falling into these kinds of 'trap'. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone; my groupmates are all really nice people (as in the really nice kind not just the normal nice kind). It's no one's fault. But perhaps i need to think about the mindset i should adopt as i approach these situations..
